SUMMARY:
The Principal Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of leading edge power conversion products with a focus on reliability, productability, lowest cost, and raising the bar on power density and efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Leads multiple product development projects and research assignments with the assistance from lower level engineers.
- As a staff level engineering lead, mentors other engineers in the development of various products.
- Reviews PCB layouts & other design documents prior to their releases for procurement or production.
- Research and vet new technologies for future product needs.
- Intimately familiar with state-of the art techniques for efficiency optimization.
- Work with compliance groups to ensure successful completion of certification process.
- Write engineering requirements documents, test plans, validation reports.
- Empirically models and simulates complex circuits.
- Propose circuit topology, perform loss budget, evaluate performance targets, estimate product cost from a given product spec or market requirement document.
- Designs complex circuits (power, control, supervisory, regulatory).
- Reviews PCB layouts & other design documents prior to their releases for procurement or production.
- Support product qualifications to ensure design integrity. Determine root cause and implement corrective actions to close all issues found.
- Oversees the preparation of document deliverables for customers, factory pre-release and final production release.
- Responsible for the preparation of ECOs to initiate design changes.
- Supports Marketing and Sales staff in the course of opportunity generation.
- Oversees the design review process to ensure all products meet their intended design specifications and complies with all appropriate engineering guidelines and requirements.
- Conceives, design and develops new families of BMP DC/DC power converters based on Customer and Marketing generated product specification.
- Resolves and overcomes challenging technical hurdles with innovative circuitry and/or methods.
- Generates relevant documentation to support design, manufacturing, and the marketing of products.
- Travels to remote contract manufacturers to troubleshoot issues and bring them to resolution.
SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
- BSEE with 8 years, MSEE with 5 years or Ph.D. with 2 years’ experience in designing & developing high-frequency, high-density DC/DC power converters.
- Minimum 5 years of product development experience, with evidence of successful concept, to prototyping, to manufacturing/production.
- Proficient in the use of MathCAD, PSpice, SImplis or other design software tools.
- Proficient in M.S. Office Suite. PADS SW a plus.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in all facets of high frequency high-density switching power supply design including circuit topologies, control theories, loop compensation, magnetics design, EMI/RFI, supervisory functions, and PCB layout.
- Demonstrated ability to work and thrive in a fast paced engineering environment and bring products to high volume manufacturing.
- Must be flexible, pro-active, and willing to dedicate the necessary efforts when needed to meet team objectives.
- Possesses a deep knowledge and experience in a multitude of power conversion topologies and methodologies; Flyback, Resonant, LLC, Buck, ZVS, Synchronous, Current-mode-control, etc.
- Possesses good understanding of thermals, mechanical and packaging challenges.
- Possess knowledge of high volume manufacturing technologies and production variances.
- Works well with cross-functional teams.
- Has excellent analytical/problem solving skills and ability to guide critical decisions.
- Experience in digital control via embedded controllers and associated firmware.
- Solid understanding in the theory, design, construction and implementation of magnetics both embedded and SMT versions.
- Solid foundation in PCB layout, component placement and routing.
